Hi Creative Mamas! In this post I want to show you a super easy and quick way to get kids crafting with this fabric scraps craft.
What to do with fabric scraps
By decorating frames using fabric scraps you can get kids involved in choosing their favorite colors and textures to make their rooms a fun and playful environment. It’s also a fantastic way to upcycle all those little fabric scraps from previous sewing projects.
Recycled fabric scraps craft projects
My kids have always been fascinated by my fabric scraps bins. As little kids they would play with them and make up all sorts of interesting soft toys and fabric collages.
I liked them playing with my left over fabric pieces because it was a way for them to develop their fine motor skills and their tactile sensory games. It was also way cheaper than toys ๐
What can a child do with fabric scraps
I started coming up with ideas of what they could do with all these fabric left over that they could use to decorate their rooms and play with. Here are some of my favorite projects for kids to make by using fabric left overs:
- How to make super easy crafts for kids: Fabric Hedgehog
- How to make a doll using Doll Patterns (Free)
- Get kids crafting with easy pom pom paper mache letters
Today I want to share with you another project which we just finished and it’s great if you have a child that likes making presents for their friends or loves decorating their room.

Materials and Equipment
- Little wooden frames (These can be bought or upcycled old frames)
- Fabric scraps
- Fabric glue
- Fabric scissors
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
Step 1
Place the wooden frames on your working surface. Get the kids to gather their favorite fabric left overs and get ready to cut some fabric strips.
For this tutorial my daughter who is 10 cut all her strips using fabric scissors and I cut mine using a rotary cutter.
However, she had a go with the rotary cutter and she quite liked it. You can use whatever is safer for your kids.
Step 2
Measure the width of the wooden frame. Our frame measured 1 inch wide so I cut my strip 1 inch wide.
If you cut the strips with a rotary cutter you can easily follow the cutting mat gridlines. This makes it super fast. You can also cut 2 or 3 layers of fabric in one go.
This is how our frame looked like next to all our fabric scraps strips.
Step 3
Glue around the wooden frame using your fabric glue.
Make sure you are not using too much. You only need a little.
Spread the glue around the frame evenly. We were a bit rough and it turned out ok ๐ this is an ideal craft project for the kids!
Step 4
Play around with your fabric combinations before glueing the fabric to the frame. This is the fun part!
Start by glueing the top part and then move to the sides around the frame.
This is how our first frame looked like once we finished the glueing.
These are the other 2 frames we made.
These are the 3 frames we made before adding the finishing touches.
Finishing the decorated frames with fabric scraps projects
At this stage all you need to do is trim the excess fabric and place your child’s favorite drawings or photos into the frame.
My daughter is a keen drawer so we love displaying her artwork in our crafty frames ๐
You also have the option to add some xtra embellishments in the corners such as a fabric flower or a woolen pom pom or a little plushie.
We added all of the above and this is how our frames looked by the end.
You can keep decorating around these frames. The sky is the limit. I love making fabric flowers and adding them to the frames. They make great birthday gifts!
