Hi Creative Mamas! I have a little Valentines handmade card for kids project that it’s super easy to make and its guaranteed to make your kids smile!
This tutorial is suitable for kids 3 years old and up. For the little ones you may want to help them punching the holes on the card and make sure they are supervised with the sewing part of the project.
Using a needle and thread to make these Valentines Day handmade cards is a great way to get kids started in sewing.
I used to draw on paper and then punch little holes all around my drawings when I was little. Then I would play by stitching the outlines of my drawings. I spent a lot of rainy afternoons doing this and I still remember those days as happy memories.

Step 1

Gather your materials. I have chosen red wool yarn because I love the contrast of the brown card paper with the red but you can play around with any yarn leftover colors that you may have ๐
Choose the heart that best fits your card size and cut around it.
Cut the paper to make the card. For this tutorial I cut a card that measures 4 inches by 8 1/2 inches (10 cm by 22 cms. Feel free to change these dimensions ๐
Fold in half and press so that the middle crease is well marked.
Trace around your heart template using a soft drawing pencil.
Step 2
Place the card on top of a folded towel. Using the needle, punch little holes all around the outline of the heart.
Step 3
Using a running stitch sew around the punched outline. Leave a little yarn tail on the underside. You will need it to make a knot at the end.
This is the underside of the card.
Continue sewing around the heart…
When you finish sewing around the heart make a little knot with the 2 yarn tails. Cut to neaten.
Punch holes on the other side of the card but this time following the square shape of the card as shown in the photo below.
Repeat the same process as before by sewing around this square.
When you finish sewing around the square make another little knot with the 2 yarn tails. Trim to neaten.
Step 4
Give your kids the white gel pen and allow them to draw whatever they like inside the sewn heart. This will be the front cover of the card.
My daughter made this handmade Valentines Day card for her best friend and she wanted to include a little something inside.
You can encourage your kids to write another little Happy Valentines Day message . Also, using washi tape they can apply a little lollipop like my daughter did or some wrapped candy.
You can also make these cards black and play around with different color gel pens for a stunning collection of handmade Valentines Day cards for kids ๐
I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial! If you want to get a bit more experimental with paper crafts try dyeing paper using food coloring or tea staining to add more texture to it ๐
